This full-time distance learning M.A. allows you to investigate the vast function of the internet in a world where the internet has become part of its critical infrastructure. The Master鈥檚 programme will help you analyse the importance of the internet and to understand how it has strategic relevance in the governing of nation states. From cyberwar to diplomacy to business, the Master鈥檚 in Contemporary Diplomacy will train you to work in the most prominent diplomatic arena of the coming decades. Focusing on practical diplomatic skills and delivered through a 10-day residential workshop in Malta, you will then be given the opportunity to write at length about internet governance and related topics of your choosing.

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of:

a Bachelor degree obtained with at least Second Class Honours or with at least Category II in an area of study deemed relevant by the Board or
appropriate professional qualifications, together with sufficient related professional experience, that are acceptable to the Senate and deemed comparable to the qualifications in the above paragraph by the Board.

In addition to the compulsory study-units, students are required to choose a total of 18 ECTS credits from the elective study-units on offer during the duration of the course. The total number of study-units to be covered should as much as possible be spread evenly over each of the semesters.

* Students may apply to change their full-time status to part-time and complete the Dissertation in two semesters (February-September). Students are required to choose at least one of the study-units IRL5045, IRL5092 or IRL5093. Study-unit IRL5045 is offered during semester 2 of academic year 2024-25, study-unit IRL5092 is offered during semester 1 of academic year 2024-25, and study-unit IRL5093 is offered during the summer period of academic year 2023-24.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master in Contemporary Diplomacy (Internet Governance) - M.A. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

Participate in global forums and policy-shaping discussions
Research, analyse, and inform about current issues in internet governance
Prepare and assist in position papers and input to global requests for comments and agendas
Address current needs in emerging internet issues
Understand the threat of cybersecurity and how to deal with it
Appreciate the active role of internet policymaking

The Master in Contemporary Diplomacy (Internet Governance) provides two new career priorities:

Preparation for traditional diplomats to understand the complexities of global Internet governance policy shaping.
You will be required to understand and provide input to Internet processes that will affect the future of your country, be it a diplomat, government official, or as a regulator. This course will give you the necessary traditional foundation for career advancement, but will also prepare you to address the issues of tomorrow.
Formal training in negotiation and diplomatic processes for actors in Internet governance from outside the traditional diplomatic community.
As a potential stakeholder from the private sector, academia, civil society, the technical community and international organizations, you will be valuable in providing diplomatic skills and credentials to their expertise in order to engage effectively in global and regional forums.
